A second half brace from Omar Marmoush allied to a first half leveller from Savinho proved the difference at St James’ Park.
The hosts had taken an early lead thanks to Harvey Barnes.
But after that it was all City as Pep Guardiola’s side seized total control.
Savinho claimed a somewhat unconventional equaliser six minutes before the break the ball going in off his standing leg.
Then Marmoush took centre stage as the Egyptian struck on both 47 and 65 minutes to give City command of the game and extend his own magnificent individual record against the Magpies.
Victory also made it nine FA Cup quarter-final appearances in 10 seasons under Pep Guardiola.
