Speculation continues to grow that Arsenal could look to strengthen their attacking options in the summer transfer window and replace Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus with Atletico Madrid superstar Julian Alvarez.
ARSENAL manager Mikel Arteta has built one of the most dynamic attacking units in the Premier League, but questions about the club’s long-term striker options have persisted. While Jesus has played a crucial role since arriving from Manchester City in 2022, injuries and inconsistency in front of goal have occasionally disrupted his impact.
Jesus offers qualities that Arteta values highly. His ability to press defenders, link midfield and attack, and create space for teammates has been central to Arsenal’s fluid attacking style.
Rather than operating as a traditional striker, he often drops deeper to help build play, allowing wide forwards and attacking midfielders to move into dangerous positions.
However, one criticism that has followed the Brazilian throughout his career is his goal-scoring output. While he contributes significantly to Arsenal’s overall play, some observers believe the club could benefit from a more clinical centre-forward capable of consistently converting chances.
That is where Álvarez enters the conversation. The Argentine striker has built a reputation as one of the most intelligent and hard-working forwards in world football. Known for his relentless pressing, movement and finishing ability, Álvarez has thrived in high-intensity tactical systems.
In terms of style, Álvarez shares several characteristics with Jesus. Both players are mobile, energetic and comfortable operating across multiple attacking positions. Like Jesus, Álvarez is capable of pressing aggressively and linking play with midfielders.
But one area where the Argentine may hold an advantage is his instinct inside the penalty area. Álvarez is often praised for his sharp positioning and composure in front of goal, traits that could help ARSENAL convert more of the chances they create.
Another factor is age and momentum. Álvarez is entering what many consider to be the peak years of a striker’s career. Arsenal’s recruitment strategy under Arteta has often focused on signing players approaching or entering their prime, making him a potentially attractive target.
Of course, signing Álvarez would not be straightforward. Atlético Madrid are unlikely to let one of their key attackers leave easily, and any transfer would likely require a substantial financial commitment.
There is also the tactical question of how he would fit into Arsenal’s current structure. Arteta has carefully built a system that relies on fluid attacking rotations rather than a fixed focal point up front.
Ultimately, whether Álvarez would be an upgrade on Jesus may depend on what Arsenal believe they need most from their striker. If the priority is link-up play and tactical flexibility, Jesus already provides those qualities.
But if the club is searching for a forward with a sharper goal-scoring edge, Álvarez could represent a compelling option as ARSENAL look to take the next step in their pursuit of major trophies.
