Newcastle United turn their attention to Barcelona in the Champions League after exiting the FA Cup.

The Magpies took the lead in the 18th minute through Harvey Barnes but couldn’t hold onto their advantage as Savinho equalised before half-time.

Omar Marmoush then put Man City ahead just two minutes into the second half before the Egyptian forward scored again on the hour-mark.

Reflecting on how the game unfolded, Trippier told BBC Radio Newcastle: “Home or away, you need to start the game well against Man City and we did that. For the first 30-35 minutes, we matched them, we get the goal but they equalised.

“Going into half-time, we felt positive even though the momentum maybe swung their way. It’s a disappointing to concede so early in the second-half.

“You can never concede against a team like this because it just shows the quality of their individuals and as a team.”

It is the second time Man City have knocked the Magpies out of a cup this season, having won 5-1 on aggregate in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

Trippier added: “Every competition, Carabao Cup, FA Cup, as an Englishman, I know how precious this cup is, so you want to go far in it but we’ve got to hold our hands up, Man City were the better team. Their champions for a reason.

“We hold our hands up, no excuses from us today. They were the better team.”

After playing over 45 minutes with 10 men in their 2-1 win over Manchester United on Wednesday night, Eddie Howe has opted to make four changes to his starting XI.

Both Joelinton and Anthony Gordon were carrying knocks so were limited to a substitute appearance, while Dan Burn also dropped to the bench. Jacob Ramsey missed out due to suspension.

Newcastle are in the middle of a relentless schedule, with Barcelona to come next on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie, but Trippier insists there can be no complaints or excuses.

Trippier said: “It was a big physical output against Man United but again, no excuses about the games or schedule etc.

“Throughout my career I’ve been in this position many times and this is where you want to be as a footballer, you want to be playing Champions League football against Barcelona or whoever it may be.

“We have to forget this game quickly, we’ve got another huge game on Tuesday, I know the supporters will be fully up for it so we have to perform and start well to give them into the game.”
