Why Pep Guardiola will be on touchline for Carabao Cup final despite domestic ban

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola will be on the Wembley touchline for the Carabao Cup final later this month despite a domestic ban.

Harvey Barnes fired the Magpies ahead in the 18th minute but City were level through Savinho shortly before the break.

Omar Marmoush then bagged a second-half brace as the Cityzens ultimately eased into the quarter-finals of the competition.

However, the evening was overshadowed somewhat by Guardiola's booking for berating fourth official Lewis Smith after Kieran Trippier had fouled Jeremy Doku.

Managers are handed a touchline ban for every three yellow cards they receive, while new regulations implemented this season means a sixth booking results in a two-match suspension.

That means Guardiola won't be in the dugout for City's game against West Ham next weekend and their FA Cup quarter-final in the first weekend of April.

The Carabao Cup final meeting with Arsenal falls between both games, but Guardiola will be on the Wembley touchline when the rivals lock horns for the first piece of domestic silverware.

That's because according to FA guidelines 'play-off matches [semi-finals and finals] in the EFL and National League System, as well as finals of the Emirates FA Cup, EFL Cup, EFL Trophy are exempt from any automatic touchline ban for the accumulation of cautions by technical area occupants'.

And reacting to his two-game touchline ban, Guardiola has said he will 'go on holidays' for the next two games.

"I will tell you something - we have all the records in this country, all of them, despite everything. We have the record of the manager with the most yellow cards. I want all records and now I have it," the City boss stated after his side's St. James' Park success.

"Two-game ban now and I will go on holidays the next two games. There are things after 10 years I cannot understand. Review the action. Of course I'm going to defend Doku and all my teams."

One player who won't be available for City for the Carabao Cup final is centre-back Marc Guehi due to this little known rule after the England international moved to the Cityzens in January.

Prior to next weekend's game at the London Stadium, City are in European action in midweek.

The Premier League powerhouse travel to Madrid on Wednesday to face Real Madrid in their first leg round-of-16 Champions League clash.

Los Blancos then make the trip to Manchester the following week for their second leg tie as City seek to book a quarter-final spot.

The winner of their last-16 clash will face either Atalanta or Bayern Munich in the next round of Europe's elite club competition.
