Patriots' A.J. Brown trade update is positive but pricey

The New England Patriots are entering this offseason in major need of a No. 1 wide receiver.

Stefon Diggs filled that role pretty well on the run to a Super Bowl appearance, but Diggs is being released, and so there's an opening to be Drake Maye's top target with the Pats.

A.J. Brown might be the most logical player to fill that, if the Patriots can meet the price.

Brown is a conceptual trade option from the Philadelphia Eagles, although it's not a guarantee he gets moved.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Sunday that New England is at least in the picture.

"New England is in the mix," Fowler writes.

The cost, though, could be prohibitive.

"Philly is asking for a steep price for Brown -- one executive said it wants a first- and second-round pick for him," Fowler writes. "Perhaps that changes."

DK Metcalf, as an example, moved last season from Seattle to Pittsburgh for just a second-round pick.

There's almost no chance a team would pay that intense asking price to get Brown, so it could become a game of chicken.

Are the teams willing to compromise? Will the Eagles cave? Or will they stand firm and not move Brown at all?

The Patriots are clearly interested and will likely be monitoring how that price develops.

That might stay the way it is unless the price goes down, though, because that's quite a lot to ask.
