Giants and Commanders set up for free agent battle based on latest running back rumor

A pair of NFC East foes, the New York Giants and Washington Commanders, could find themselves in a battle over the same free-agent running back.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Seattle Seahawks running back and pending free agent Kenneth Walker considers both teams as potential landing spots for him, although Walker figures to have more than just those two options at his disposal.

"I'm hearing Walker will consider the Giants and Commanders among his options, with the Titans as a possibility, too," Fowler reported.

When it comes to a market value for the Super Bowl MVP, Fowler says $12 million per year is believed to be the ceiling, but it could go higher depending on how many teams get involved.

"Some teams I've talked to are setting the market's ceiling at around $12 million. That could go up if enough teams get involved," Fowler said.

The Commanders have a clear need at running back with no sure starting solution on the roster for 2026. Washington has four backs hitting the open market, leaving them with Jacory Croskey-Merritt as the only notable back under contract.

The expectation going into the offseason was that the Giants were mostly set at the position with Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary, the latter of whom just restructured his contract to stay in New York.

However, rumors have been swirling that the Giants are big-game hunting for another back, with Walker being mentioned specifically.

Spending big money on Walker makes more sense for the Commanders, though, as they have a much more dire need at the position than Big Blue.

Washington is also flush with cap space with $87.6 million, as compared to the Giants who only have $14.2 million with a shade over 24 hours until the legal tampering period begins as of this writing.

If we had to choose between the two teams, we believe Washington will ultimately come away with Walker instead of New York.
