Liverpool have been linked with a swoop for the attacker ahead of the summer transfer window
Newcastle United attacker Anthony Gordon would fit in well at Liverpool, believes ex-Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness via Football Insider. The Reds have been linked with a move for the Premier League winger in the past. He is under contract in the North East until the summer of 2030.
Arne Slot’s side beat Wolves 3-1 away in the FA Cup last time out. Andy Robertson, Mo Salah and Curtis Jones got their goals at Molineux. They are back in action in the Champions League on Tuesday against Galatasaray.
Liverpool would be good fit for Anthony Gordon, says Keith Wyness
Wyness believes Liverpool would be better next destination for Gordon over Arsenal and has said: “His performances haven’t been great. He got booed off, I believe, at the weekend when Everton won up there.
“And of course, he wasn’t well received by the Everton fans as well. I think Arsenal may be a very good option for him, but I don’t see him fitting in quite that well into the Arsenal squad as I think he might do in Liverpool.
“So I think it’s still a two-horse race. And I’m not so sure Arsenal are really that keen right now. I think they will wait and see. But no, I think Liverpool, to me, have still got their heads in front.”
Gordon, 25, joined Newcastle back in 2023. He has since made 147 appearances for the Toon Army and has scored 37 goals, 15 of which have come this season. They could face a battle to keep hold of him down the line though amid attention from elsewhere.
The England international, who has 16 caps to his name, had a spell in the academy at Liverpool as a youngster. He then switched to Everton and rose up through the Toffees’ ranks before breaking into their first-team following a loan away at Preston North End. The Liverpudlian made 78 outings during his days at Goodison Park and found the net on seven occasions.
Liverpool reaction to Wolves win
Speaking after Liverpool’s latest victory over Wolves, former player Danny Murphy said: "Two out of the five new signings have done well. Of the players who were there last season, only one or maybe two have played to the level. It's just not enough," he said.
"All these factors have transpired together for this fall away that nobody anticipated. All you can do is try to rebuild and fight back and have some success by winning one of the cups. The Champions League is going to be more difficult, this is a realistic competition for Liverpool to win.
"When you're at the top, even if you have a bad season, for Liverpool you're expected to win something. For Slot, he is really needing something positive to end this season to - I think - keep him in a job."
