This offseason, the San Francisco 49ers have some work to do on both sides of the ball. One of the main issues on offense is the wide receiver room.
Brandon Aiyuk is about to be cut, Jauan Jennings is hitting free agency, and beyond Ricky Pearsall, the WR room is barren. It would not be a surprise if the 49ers made a splash or two at receiver this offseason.
However, despite such a glaring weakness, the WR room isn't the 49ers' biggest need according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner. Instead, thanks to a 20-sack season, the pass rusher room is the biggest need for San Francisco this offseason.
49ers' biggest need isn't WR, but pass rusher
"Biggest need: Defensive line," Wagoner writes. "There's a strong argument for wide receiver, too, but GM John Lynch emphasized the top priority at the combine."
At the combine, Lynch said, "We've always prided ourselves on our defensive front and getting after people. You've got to put the quarterback down, and so that's something that we want to address, and we will address."
As it currently stands, the 49ers need a lot of help along the defensive line. Nick Bosa was hurt for most of the 2025 season, so getting him back and healthy will be a big boost.
The 49ers had just 20 sacks in 2025, and even though Bosa wasn't there most of the season, the rest of the defensive front was a major let-down. The Niners need help along the defensive line, and badly.

But, beyond him, the production from Bryce Huff was poor, and their young defensive lineman in Mykel Williams, Alfred Collins, and C.J. West didn't make an impact yet.
There's hope for this room, but more star talent, especially coming off the edge, needs to be added this offseason.
After the 49ers defense recorded 20 sacks in 2025, three fewer than Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns got on his own this past season, the need for more pass rush help cannot be more apparent.
While wide receiver might be a massive need, the pass rush room cannot go without improvement. Whether it's more help on the outside or even some upgrades on the inside, the 49ers need to add to their defensive front this offseason.
