Free agency opens across the NFL tomorrow, and the Green Bay Packers have some work to do. With some of their own pending free agents still unsigned and some additional needs to consider, Green Bay has a multitude of options ahead. The Packers will have to consider how many of their own free agents to retain as opposed to how many external free agents to sign, all while working within the confines of their budget.

There is one internal free agent with whom the Packers have been working to get a deal done, and Green Bay fans now have an update on how negotiations have been going.

Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Packers WR Romeo Doubs is set to hit the market. Talks between the Packers and Doubs did not result in a deal, and he’ll become an unrestricted free agent free to sign with any team.

“Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs plans to hit the market,” Fowler wrote on Sunday morning. “Talks with Green Bay did not result in a new deal. He’ll have several suitors. The Patriots, Commanders and Titans are closely watching his market, along with the 49ers. Doubs is considered by some evaluators to be the best all-around receiver in the group.”

That last part is notable, as up until this point, Colts WR Alec Pierce was considered the prize of the free agent market at wide receiver. Pierce may still get more on his new deal that Doubs will, but Doubs could be viewed as a fallback option for teams that miss on Pierce. It’s worth pointing out that there is strong overlap between the teams monitoring Pierce’s market and those watching Doubs’.

A former fourth-round pick by the Packers out of Nevada, Doubs had 42 receptions as a rookie and his role has only grown since then. In four seasons in Green Bay, Doubs had 202 receptions for 2,424 yards and 21 touchdowns, averaging 12.0 yards per reception.

The Green Bay Packers Can Replace WR Romeo Doubs Internally

While the Packers obviously wanted to retain Doubs — they were working hard to sign him to an extension, after all — Green Bay was far from desperate to keep him around. Clearly, Doubs wanted more money or guarantees than the Packers were willing to give him, probably because they still have a lot of options in their wide receiver room.

After returning from injury, WR Christian Watson emerged as the clear top option for this Packers team on the outside. Jayden Reed is a great slot weapon, and the Packers used a first-round pick on WR Matthew Golden last year as well. With Doubs now set to be playing elsewhere in 2026, Golden is set to step right into his role. The cupboard certainly isn’t bare in Green Bay at all.
