Report: Chelsea delay Geovany Quenda's return to Sporting Lisbon amid concern

Geovany Quenda has not officially joined Chelsea yet, but he has been spending time at their Cobham training facility.

Following surgery on his foot, Quenda has been doing his rehabilitation under Chelsea’s supervision.

It was recently reported that Quenda would return to Sporting very soon, but there appears to have been a little bit of a delay.

SCENARIO: Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Yan Diomande but must sell one of their current wingers first…

Who are you sacrificing? 👋

Chelsea delay Geovany Quenda comeback after loss of muscle mass

The expectation was for Quenda to return to Sporting on Friday; however, that has not happened.

According to Record, Chelsea have concerns about the amount of muscle mass that Quenda has lost following his operation.

As a result, they want to keep the winger back for a bit longer and put him on a specific programme that can help him to rebuild his muscle mass in two weeks.

In terms of Chelsea’s current wide options, Jamie Gittens is still injured but is thought to be close to a comeback. The same goes for Estevao Willian.

With Gittens and Estevao currently on the sidelines, Alejandro Garnacho has found the right time to discover some form. Garnacho has impressed in recent games against Wrexham and Aston Villa.

Why Chelsea are playing it right with cautious approach

Quenda could have a bigger role than people are envisioning at Chelsea next season.

Garnacho is playing well at the moment, but he has been pretty inconsistent this term, while Gittens is still trying to find his feet after arriving from the Bundesliga.

Quenda can play on the left and right, so there could be plenty of opportunities for him at Stamford Bridge.

Ultimately, some at Chelsea may feel that he will be a useful player as soon as he joins, so it is important that his physical condition is really looked after before then. If that means holding him back a bit and not allowing the Portuguese to be rushed into action, so be it.

Sporting will want Quenda back as soon as possible, but their hands are tied. Besides, the young talent will not be any good to them if he has lost too much muscle strength.
