Green Bay Packers: Romeo Doubs fails to reach contract agreement for 2026

The Green Bay Packers have been pretty busy over the last couple of days. On Saturday, they sent defensive lineman Colby Wooden to the Indianapolis Colts for linebacker Zaire Franklin. In doing so, they pretty much cemented the fact that Quay Walker will not be back in Green Bay.

And on Sunday, it was announced that Green Bay had reached an agreement on a three-year contract with center Sean Rhyan. Similarly, this move would seem to solidify the belief that Elgton Jenkins is either going to be cut or traded at the start of the new league year.

While these two transactions answer two very big questions that they had regarding depth at crucial positions, there are still some others that need answering.

Wide receiver is not necessarily a need for the Packers this off-season, but Romeo Doubs has been the subject of free agent rumors for weeks. As he is about to hit the open market, there were some rumblings that it was possible that Green Bay would retain him.

However, that will not be happening:

As seen above, Doubs was in talks about a new contract with the Packers, but no agreement was made. This, though, makes all the sense in the world because Green Bay made two significant decisions at the position last year.

First, the selected two wide receivers in the 2025 NFL Draft: Matthew Golden and Savion Williams. Then, they signed Christian Watson to a one-year contract extension through the 2026 season. What is more, Watson is expected to sign another contract extension with Green Bay, which would tie him to the team even longer.

Additionally, the Packers still have Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks on their roster. With those five, there just was not room for Doubs in 2026, especially with Golden and Williams expected to get more opportunities next season.

Last year, Doubs led the Packers with 55 receptions for 724 yards and six touchdowns. He is not going to be the most expensive wide receiver in free agency, but will certainly make more money elsewhere than he would in Green Bay.

The indication from Jeremy Fowler is that the Packers and Doubs did, indeed, discuss a possible reunion. Given their depth at wide receiver, though, one can assume that their offer was nowhere near what Doubs wants.

And all of that may have just been a formality anyway. Ken Ingalls posted on X (formerly Twitter) that Doubs had been trying to wiggle his way out of Green Bay for the last two years:

Surprise Level: Zero on Romeo Doubs not returning to Green Bay.

Honestly I’m surprised he stuck on his entire 4 years. By all accounts I’ve heard he’s been trying to get out of town for 2 years and was on the block in some early trade talks along the way.

Indeed, Doubs’ name was part of trade rumors for the past two years, but he was never moved. The Packers must not have gotten any offers they considered to be worth it. Now, they are primed to get a compensatory pick in the 2027 NFL Draft once he signs elsewhere in free agency.
