Newcastle United blew an early lead to lose 3-1 to Manchester City in the FA Cup.

John Stones has quipped that he is “sick” of playing against Newcastle United this season.

The two clubs met for the fifth time in 2025-26, with Manchester City dumping the Magpies out of both cup competitions. It is only possible for Newcastle to face Pep Guardiola’s men again if they both reach the Champions League final.

Eddie Howe’s side took an early lead through Harvey Barnes and looked in control at the 30-minute mark. However, as has often been the case throughout the campaign, Newcastle faded, with Savinho and an Omar Marmoush brace snatching the tie for the visitors.

Speaking post-match, England international Stones laughed about how he is fed up with facing Newcastle. He said: “It’s (the quadruple) definitely possible. We’ve done some crazy things here. We’ve played Newcastle five times now this season. I think we’re both sick of playing each other.”

John Stones back in rhythm

Stones has suffered an injury-ravaged campaign but is easing his way back to his top levels ahead of the World Cup. He added: “It was just nice to be out there and contributing. Getting your rhythm back is massive, here in the first 20 minutes is always difficult with their pace and power. Having that positivity to be ready when called upon and I think we did that tonight.

“The team’s been playing great with clean sheets and on a winning run and it’s a case where you have to wait for your chance. There’s so many big games coming up that we know that everyone is going to play and pull their weight and we’ve done that so well over the years in high pressure moments.

“That’s why we’ve been successful, this is another chance to do that and set the standards for ourselves. We have to keep the standards and look at one game at a time.”
