WR Mike Evans confirms major decision ahead of NFL free agency

After 12 seasons in Tampa Bay, Mike Evans could be wrapping up his time with the Buccaneers. The veteran receiver has put together a remarkable run with the franchise. 11 straight 1,000-yard campaigns, 866 receptions, 108 touchdowns, six Pro Bowls, and a Super Bowl ring.

Re-signing Evans remains one of the organization’s top priorities, but the window is closing fast. With the legal tampering period set to begin in just over 24 hours, Tampa Bay may already be in a race against time.

Evans is projected to draw significant interest from teams around the NFL, particularly those looking for an established presence at wide receiver.

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Evans plans to explore the free-agent market, a decision confirmed by his agent, Deryk Gilmore.

Plenty of teams should fit what Evans is looking for, and the interest will be mutual. His streak of 1,000-yard seasons came to an end last year, but injuries were the main culprit.

A severe hamstring issue in Week 3 started the trouble, and when he returned, he suffered a concussion and broken clavicle in the same game. Evans ended up appearing in just eight contests, a sharp departure from a career built on availability.

The injuries are not expected to linger into 2026, so attention has shifted to what comes next contractually.

Evans turns 33 shortly before next season and has hinted that retirement could be on the horizon. Tampa Bay would prefer to keep him and let him finish his career where it started, but cap space and roster construction could complicate things.

Evans pulled in a $13 million base salary during the final year of his current deal and previously signed a two-year, $52 million extension in 2024. He’s currently slated to become an unrestricted free agent in 2026.
