Kieran Morrison breaks Liverpool goalscoring record

The pathway to the first-team has never felt more crowded with a plethora of talent coming through the academy.

The pathway to the first team has never felt more crowded with a plethora of talent coming through the academy.

Liverpool’s academy is quietly developing some of the game’s hottest prospects.

Rio Ngumoha was seen as a real coup from Chelsea, and the explosive winger quickly moved through the ranks within the youth systems and has been consistently making an impression on the first team this season.

Whilst Arne Slot has openly expressed his desire to manage the youngster’s minutes, his talent is clear and he fully earned the start that was given to him against Wolves in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Friday night.

As well as the likes of Ngumoha, Rob Page’s U21s side are really impressing at the minute sat just three points off the top of Premier League 2.

Despite regularly occupying a space on Liverpool’s first-team bench, Trey Nyoni is also a key part of the side’s success under Rob Page, demonstrating the ability that has granted him a regular place in the first-team squad.

Kieran Morrison is another player that may become a regular spot-holder in Arne Slot’s first team in years to come.

The 19-year-old has been in fine form this season, with Rob Page also highlighting how the youngster has added a mature side to his game after gifting him the armband.

Speaking to RedmenTV on the 1st March after yet another brace from Kieran Morrison, Page said: “You see him work hard in training. Giving him the armband has given him another lift as well. We’ve given him that responsibility, and he’s absolutely shining with it.”

“I saw from day one he had the ability, but there were certain things he was doing in and around, not just on the field, but off the field. I’ve absolutely drilled that into him, and he’s taken it on board.”

Liverpool U21s faced Wolves U21s this afternoon and stormed into a 5-0 lead at half-time.

Kieran Morrison found himself on the scoresheet in the 23rd minute and in the process made club history.

Lewis Bower, who follows the academy closely, stated on X:

“He now has the highest ever league goal tally for at least the last 16 years, when the data is available on transfermarkt. Made by Trey Nyoni. Liverpool 3-0 after 23 minutes.”

The Northern Ireland youth international has scored 13 goals in 16 games so far in the Premier League 2 this season, a remarkable achievement from the player.

Morrison’s form has not gone unnoticed by Arne Slot, who has included him in his matchday squad on several occasions this season, but his one first-team appearance came all the way back in October in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup exit to Crystal Palace.

The leap from the academy to the first team is arguably the hardest one to make in football, but with so many elite talents coming through, Arne Slot may find himself with no choice but to award these youngsters with more opportunities.

GOAL. Kieran Morrison!
