Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors takes pride of guarding the NBA stars.

The Golden State Warriors nearly rallied late Saturday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Instead, the game ended with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander hitting a clutch three-pointer over Draymond Green — a dagger that sealed Oklahoma City’s 104-97 victory.

For Green, the moment was frustrating. But the veteran defender also acknowledged the matchup itself — one of the league’s premier scorers against one of its most decorated defenders — is part of what keeps him motivated.

“I think our coaching staff figured out I have a lot more energy when I get that kind of assignment,” Green said. “Because like I said, if coach calls on me to guard Kawhi, to guard KD, to guard Shai — that’s a badge of honor.”

At 36, the four-time champion continues to embrace the league’s toughest defensive assignments, even when the result stings.

Draymond Green Frustrated After Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Game-Sealing Shot

The decisive moment came with less than a minute remaining.

With Oklahoma City protecting a narrow two-point lead, Gilgeous-Alexander isolated against Green at the top of the floor, created space with a sidestep and buried a contested three-pointer to stretch the Thunder’s lead to five.

Green admitted afterward that the shot still bothered him.

“I’m disgusted I gave up that three at the end,” Green said. “It was too much rhythm. I should have pressed up more. I’m beating myself up about that.”

Despite the frustration, the play highlighted the competitive respect between two elite players on opposite sides of the matchup.

Gilgeous-Alexander praised Green afterward for the challenge.

“Multiple DPOYs. Multiple Defensive Teams. Multiple championships,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “He’s been the anchor to their championship defense for a decade. You don’t get many better looks than that as an offensive player. It was great. It was fun. Moments and matchups, opportunities like that are why you play. You would like to test yourself and see where you are against the best of the best.”

Warriors Veteran Still Thrives on Guarding NBA Superstars

Green has built his legacy as one of the most versatile defenders in NBA history, anchoring the Warriors’ defense during multiple championship runs.

Even now, the veteran forward relishes the challenge of defending the league’s best offensive players.

“I’m 36 years old. Three games straight — that’s a badge of honor,” Green said. “So I get excited as hell because it’s a challenge.”

Whether it’s Gilgeous-Alexander, Kevin Durant or Kawhi Leonard, Green often draws the toughest defensive assignment for Golden State.

For him, those moments still provide the ultimate test.

“But to draw those responsibilities at this point in my career is amazing,” Green said. “It energizes me a lot because, number one, my team needs me to handle that matchup.”

Draymond Green Explains Golden State’s Defensive Approach

Green’s assignments are also central to Golden State’s defensive strategy.

By trusting Green to defend star scorers one-on-one, the Warriors can avoid excessive help defense that might open up shooters.

“Part of the reason we want to go to that is so we don’t have to help so much,” Green said. “So I have to take on that responsibility and make sure we don’t have to help a ton.”

Even when facing elite offensive players, Green refuses to concede easy scoring opportunities.

“I’m a very prideful person,” he said. “I just can’t go out there and get murdered — ever. It’s going to happen when you’re playing against great players like that, but at the same time, for me, I can’t just lay down. I can’t go out there and make it feel easy.”

Warriors Star Says Guarding Elite Scorers ‘Brings the Best Out of You’

Despite the sting of the loss, Green said matchups against the NBA’s most dangerous scorers continue to bring out his competitive edge.

“Like I said the other night, it brings the best out of you when you’re guarding guys like that,” he said.

Green also noted just how dangerous Gilgeous-Alexander can be if defenders lose focus even briefly.

“I was telling them on the bench, the moment you think you can relax on Shai, he’s going downhill,” Green said. “So it’s been fun guarding three of the best scorers we have in this league.”

Warriors Continue Adjusting Without Stephen Curry

Golden State continues navigating a difficult stretch while waiting for Stephen Curry to return from a knee injury.

Despite strong performances from Gui Santos and Brandin Podziemski, the Warriors ultimately could not overcome Gilgeous-Alexander’s late-game heroics.

For Green, however, the takeaway extended beyond the final shot.

It was the challenge itself.

Even after a dagger from one of the NBA’s most dynamic scorers, the Warriors’ defensive leader remains eager for the next matchup — another opportunity to test himself against the league’s best.
