With NFL free agency set to begin this week, the San Francisco 49ers made sure their kicking situation will remain stable for years to come.
Kicker Eddy Piñeiro agreed to a four-year, $17 million contract extension that includes $10 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The new deal takes Piñeiro off the market just days before he was scheduled to become a free agent.
For the 49ers, the move continues a steady turnaround at the position after a period of uncertainty. Piñeiro ultimately took over the job from Jake Moody, the kicker San Francisco selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Moody entered the league with high expectations, but his time with the 49ers was inconsistent, as missed kicks in key moments became an ongoing issue.
That instability led the 49ers to turn to Piñeiro, and the veteran quickly delivered the reliability the team had been searching for.

More on 49ers K Eddy Piñeiro
Last season, Piñeiro connected on 31 of his 34 field-goal attempts, finishing with an accuracy rate just over 91 percent. He was just as dependable on extra points, converting 39 of 40 attempts. His ability to deliver from distance also helped stabilize the 49ers’ special teams, as he knocked through multiple field goals from 50 yards or longer.
More importantly, Piñeiro brought a level of consistency the 49ers hadn’t had at the position in some time. His calm approach in pressure situations helped restore confidence whenever San Francisco stalled inside scoring range.
For a team with championship aspirations, that kind of reliability matters. Close games often come down to a single possession, and having a kicker the coaching staff trusts can make a major difference late in the season.
By signing Piñeiro to a four-year extension, the 49ers avoided the possibility of losing him in free agency and ensured their kicking situation remains settled. After searching for stability, San Francisco appears to have found it in Piñeiro.
