'The truth is': Nuno Mendes dismisses reporter's question about PSG ahead of Chelsea clash

Liam Rosenior will have instantly switched his focus from securing an FA Cup quarter-final slot to Chelsea’s clash against PSG on Wednesday. Nuno Mendes appears to have done the same.

Chelsea and PSG are in battle once again as two old enemies fight for the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday night. The first leg takes place in Paris before Chelsea welcome PSG a week later.

Liam Rosenior’s men come into the game after successfully resurrecting what had been a poor run of form. The defeat to Arsenal came after two frustrating draws against Leeds United and Burnley.

But a 4-1 away win at Aston Villa, and a 4-2 win at Wrexham, were much-needed after Rosenior’s first questionable string of results. Now, they face a PSG side going through an equally poor run of form.

The aim for Rosenior and Chelsea will be to gain a result that gives them a chance in London a week later. Whether that be a draw, an unlikely win or even a narrow, one-goal defeat, Chelsea can claw back.

But PSG come into the game having been hammered 3-1 by Monaco last Friday. Frank Leboeuf is worried for PSG coming up against this Chelsea midfield, and after the loss, Nuno Mendes spoke to reporters.

The left-back was asked if PSG’s concerning form is down to fatigue among the ranks, he instantly denied as much: “The truth is that we weren’t having as good a day as Monaco. Physically, I think we’re fine.

“But we weren’t at our level; we didn’t do what we usually do. It’s not a question of fatigue: we need to rest well and work hard ahead of Wednesday’s match. We’ll face Chelsea with the desire to win.”

Chelsea’s form against PSG in the last 11 matches

Chelsea have actually only ever beaten PSG on three occasions, and two of those wins came in the first three meetings between the two sides. A Didier Drogba brace and a John Terry goal secured a 2004 win.

It would be almost 10 years until the two sides met again, when Andre Schurrle and Demba Ba scored. Five games without a win ended when the Blues secured a 3-0 win in the Club World Cup final.

Chelsea will be hoping to reignite that brilliant Cole Palmer-inspired performance against PSG in the French capital next week, but Rosenior will have to get every one of his tactics absolutely spot on.
