Analyst details Chiefs' perfect plan to help Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs are turning over every stone in their efforts to improve the roster and avoid a similar scenario to the one they encountered in 2025.

After missing the playoffs for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era, the Chiefs are hellbent on making sure that doesn't happen again.

With needs on both sides of the ball, where the franchise should start its upgrading is anyone's guess.

But for ESPN's Nate Taylor, it is an easy thing to predict.

"Running back," Taylor wrote. "The biggest hole on the roster is arguably at that position. The Chiefs need a starter, and they want to be more explosive in their running attack. That upgrade should help quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who will be returning after a torn ACL, the most significant injury of his nine-year career."

Chiefs need Mahomes help

We have seen across the league how important it is for a quarterback to have just a competent run game.

Not even a good one. Just a rushing attack that can keep the defense honest.

The Chiefs haven't had that for a couple of years. Getting Kenneth Walker or Travis Etienne would signal Kansas City's intent to rebuild this thing as quickly as possible.

Yes, Walker and Etienne would be expensive, but they would give Mahomes a running back capable of powering the offense, allowing Mahomes to not have to be Superman all the time.

Let's see how aggressive the Chiefs will be in getting Mahomes a top running back.
