Travis Kelce has reportedly made his final decision on his NFL playing career, and the three-time Super Bowl champion tight end is planning to return for a 14th season in 2026.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and Jesse Newell, Kelce is motivated to keep playing, though he is no longer certain to re-sign with the Kansas City Chiefs—his only NFL team since entering the league in 2013.
The news marks a major development in one of the offseason’s biggest storylines, as Kelce had previously been considered a candidate to retire after a subdued 2025 campaign in which the Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in over a decade.
Russini tweeted Sunday: “Based on conversations with several teams, TE Travis Kelce appears motivated to return to play a 14th season. The Chiefs remain very much in the mix to re-sign the three-time Super Bowl champion and four-time All-Pro.”

While previous reports suggested Kelce was leaning toward returning to Kansas City, the latest updates indicate his representatives are expected to hold discussions with other teams. The Chiefs remain heavily involved and are believed to want him back, but the organization faces significant salary cap constraints. They have already restructured Patrick Mahomes’ contract and released notable veterans to create space, but more work is needed to fit Kelce’s expected salary.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach spoke positively about Kelce at the NFL Scouting Combine: “Travis is the best. He’s an icon. Hopefully, he comes back, and we’ll just kind of let that process play out.”
Russini’s reporting suggests that if Kelce ultimately signs elsewhere, it will be his decision rather than the Chiefs declining to re-sign him.
Kelce’s 2025 Season and Legacy with Kansas City Chiefs
Kelce’s 2025 season was quieter than his usual All-Pro standard, as the Chiefs struggled to an 8-9 finish and missed the playoffs. Still, the future Hall of Famer remains one of the most productive tight ends in NFL history, with three Super Bowl rings, four All-Pro selections, and a reputation as one of Patrick Mahomes’ most trusted targets.
It had long been assumed Kelce would either retire or finish his career in Kansas City, where he helped build a dynasty. The possibility of him testing free agency or signing elsewhere has shocked many fans and analysts, though his motivation to play another season aligns with his competitive fire.
What’s Next for Travis Kelce and the Chiefs
With free agency approaching, Travis Kelce’s market will be closely watched. The Chiefs are still considered favorites to retain him, but cap limitations and interest from other teams could create a competitive bidding situation. If Kelce does leave Kansas City, it would mark the end of one of the most iconic player-team partnerships in modern NFL history.
