It was quite the week for Alejandro Garnacho. He hadn’t had a start for Chelsea since the Premier League game against West Ham in late January, when he was taken off at half time.
But after a good showing against Aston Villa in midweek, he was started again against Wrexham, playing the full 90 minutes.
He scored one and effectively scored another by forcing an own goal. But his stats beyond that were fantastic too.
Garnacho’s superb stats from important cup win
The winger won 9 of his 9 ground duels. No other Chelsea player won more than 6. Incredibly, Garnacho also completed all 5 of his 5 dribbles.
That really sums up his game and shows what he can do – play with great intensity, taking his man on but also tracking back and bottling him up going the other way.
Wrexham were really motivated and made this a very tough game for Chelsea. It was just the sort of game you needed someone like Garnacho to dig deep. After 90 minutes and then 120 minutes in the same week, he won’t be getting a start in the game against PSG we wouldn’t think – but he’s done his standing with Liam Rosenior a world of good in the space of 7 days.
In other news…
Dario Essugo is keen for more minutes after finally playing following months out injured.
Essugo also spoke about the difficulties of being out for so long. He won’t want to dwell on it now he’s back, but it must have been so frustrating.
