Xabi Alonso reaches“verbal agreement” with Liverpool

Reports from Spain have claimed that Xabi Alonso has reached a verbal agreement with Liverpool FC over managing the Anfield club.

Xabi Alonso’s name has never really left Liverpool orbit despite consistent reports that the Anfield hierarchy were sticking to their guns regarding Arne Slot.

With pressure mounting on Arne Slot after an inconsistent second season at the helm, the former Reds midfielder has increasingly been framed as the obvious – and emotionally charged – candidate to take over at Anfield. Now, a report in Spain has gone a step further, claiming the romance has already moved into agreement territory.

Spanish outlet Okdiario reports that Alonso already has a “verbal agreement” in place for him to become Liverpool head coach. According to the piece, the pact would translate into a three‑year contract and is conditional on one key factor: it would only be activated if Slot does not win the Champions League this season.

They claim informal contact between Liverpool and Alonso’s camp dates back to late November, when he was already under scrutiny at Real Madrid. The report adds that Liverpool had tried to lure him from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2024, only for Alonso to stand by his word to the German club after delivering an historic unbeaten double.

After a short and ultimately ill‑fated spell in charge at the Bernabéu, which ended with a Supercopa defeat to Barcelona, Okdiario now state Alonso has set his sights firmly on Anfield as the next step in his career and already has a verbal deal in place to lead Liverpool for the next three seasons.

Meanwhile, the Spaniard has already reportedly rejected an approach from Ligue 1 side Olympique de Marseille, with it being cited that the club’s atmosphere was too unstable for him to step into.

Fabrizio Romano has also reported that Alonso is looking to step into a manager job of his choice “as soon as possible”.
