The Miami Dolphins have made some major cuts already this offseason, and a few hours before the legal tampering period of free agency begins, they cut Tua Tagovailoa.
Now, with a $50 million-plus cap hit for 2026 on their books, the Dolphins would surely love to land a quarterback for cheap. Fortunately, there are a few options.
However, among their top QB options this offseason, Connor Hughes of SNY is reporting that one has the Dolphins as his "preferred" destination. This cheap free agent QB that's interested in coming to Miami isn't Kyler Murray, but Geno Smith.
Dolphins are 'preferred' destination for Geno Smith
"The Dolphins want (Malik) Willis," Hughes reports. "If the Cardinals can steal him, MIA has Geno Smith among their list of contingency plans. Sources indicate Smith's preferred destination is Miami, where he's from."
Smith is a two-time Pro Bowl veteran QB. The 35-year-old was most recently with the Las Vegas Raiders following a trade from the Seattle Seahawks.
In 15 games for the Raiders, Smith had a 2-13 record, a 67.4% completion rate, 3,025 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and an NFL-leading 17 interceptions.
While those numbers don't instill much confidence in Smith as a starter, his production with the Seahawks in a far better offensive environment was a lot more approachable.

From 2021-2024, Smith started 52 games, going 28-24. He had a 68.5% completion rate with 12,928 passing yards, 76 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions. His QB rating was a very solid 95.9.
Smith might not bring the upside of someone like Kyler Murray or Malik Willis in free agency for the Dolphins. But, for Miami, which needs a cheap QB with Tagovailoa's dead cap hit impacting their books, Smith would be a great fit.
Hughes' report indicates the Dolphins have some interest in Smith, but the more interesting note is that Smith had the Dolphins as his preferred destination. He was born in Miramar, Florida, and could want to return home in one of the last years of his NFL career.
