Tagovailoa’s release also sets a new NFL record. The Dolphins will take on a massive $99 million dead-cap hit — the largest in league history.

Russell Wilson previously held the record after the Denver Broncos absorbed an $85 million hit when they released him in 2024. Like Denver, Miami designated Tagovailoa’s departure as a post–June 1 cut.

That designation allows the Dolphins to spread the cap hit over two seasons. According to Over The Cap metrics, Miami will absorb at least $67 million of the total in 2026.

The Dolphins have also been linked to Green Bay Packers quarterback Malik Willis, who will begin receiving offers Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, Tagovailoa has drawn interest from teams such as the Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings.

The costly move serves as a reminder of how quickly things can change in the NFL. Four years ago, Tagovailoa helped lead Miami to the first of two playoff appearances.
Now, both sides move on in search of a fresh start — while making history along the way.
