How much Chelsea will win in prize money if they beat PSG, with almost £50m pocketed already

Chelsea do battle with PSG in the first of two Champions League last 16 legs on Wednesday night in Paris – but how much will the winner of the tie earn in prize money?

Chelsea progressed to the knockout stages after beating Antonio Conte’s Napoli in the final round of group fixtures. It saw them avoid the difficulty of navigating a play-off, which saw PSG face Monaco.

PSG got the better of their Ligue 1 rivals before losing to Monaco, coincidentally, last Friday. The 3-1 defeat last week saw Nuno Mendes forced to refute claims that Luis Enrique’s side are feeling fatigued.

Chelsea have the slight advantage of playing the second leg at Stamford Bridge but against the reigning Champions League winners, Liam Rosenior’s men are up against it in pursuit of the quarter-finals.

How much prize money is at stake for winning the last 16?

On Saturday night, Chelsea earned themselves almost £250,000 for reaching the quarter-finals of the FA cup with a 4-2 win over Wrexham. Joao Pedro, Alejandro Garnacho, and Josh Acheampong scored.

Well, in the Champions League, those fees increase dramatically. Chelsea and PSG have both received a fee of £9.5m for reaching the last 16 of the competition, and the fees get bigger, according to SI.

If Chelsea can manage to repeat the success of the Club World Cup final over the course of the next week and knock PSG out of the Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals, Chelsea will earn £10.8m.

The fee Chelsea have received from their campaign so far

Champions League qualification, for all 36 teams in the league phase, earned clubs a whopping £16.1m. Then, clubs that qualified for the last 16 by finishing in the top eight, secured a further £1.7m in fees.

On top of that, clubs receive a fixed fee based on their results. A total of £600,000 for a draw and £1.8m for a win. Chelsea won five games, drew one and lost two more, equating to a total of £9.6m.

That means, already, Chelsea have earned £36.9m from their Champions League campaign so far. A win against PSG takes that total to an enormous £47.7m. That pays off Alejandro Garnacho, with change.
