Rashan Gary trade creates massive hole for Packers’ Jonathan Gannon

The Packers traded pass rusher Rashan Gary to the Dallas Cowboys Monday, hours before the “legal tampering” window opens in the NFL.

While Green Bay acquiring a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft is a solid asset for general manager Brian Gutekunst to stash away in the Packers’ warchest, the move creates a bit of a void for new incoming defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon.

Packers will need to shop for an edge rusher

When the negotiating window opens, moving off Gary suggests that the Packers will need to go shopping in what has become a loaded class of free agent pass rushers.

Gary, 28, finished the 2025 campaign with 7.5 sacks while also finishing in the top-20 among edge rushers across the league in both pressures and quarterback hits.

Whether Green Bay goes for the veteran pass rusher fire hire route and tries to sign Joey Bosa or looks for value in a younger player who could benefit from a change of scenery such as Boye Mafe, Odafe Oweh, or Arnold Ebiketie, the need is there.

Given that Micah Parsons is still recovering from a torn ACL suffered late last season, look for Green Bay to add a veteran in the hours or days ahead to make up for losing Gary’s production and while it waits for Parsons to get back on the field.
