Another young NFL talent has walked away from the game far too soon. Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Lance McCutcheon announced his retirement from professional football at age 27 on Tuesday, joining a growing list of surprising early exits this offseason that includes Cleveland Browns linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (26) and Chicago Bears center Drew Dalman (27).
McCutcheon, who carved out a journeyman career after going un-drafted in 2022, shared an emotional farewell on social media, posting photos of himself in every NFL jersey he wore and thanking everyone who helped him reach his dream.
In his heartfelt post, McCutcheon wrote:
“I just wanted to take the time to thank everyone who has played a part in this process. I couldn’t have accomplished anything that I did or made it where I did without the help from so many different people. The list of thanks that are owed is never ending, so THANK YOU to everyone out there that helped me accomplish my dream of playing in the NFL.”

The 6-foot-3, 203-pound wide receiver burst onto the scene as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022, leading the NFL in receiving yards during the preseason and generating serious hype as the next big undrafted success story. Though he never quite became the household name many hoped, McCutcheon still made his mark.
2022 (Los Angeles Rams): Appeared in 10 regular-season games, primarily on special teams, recording two solo tackles. He was targeted five times on offense but did not record a catch.
Subsequent seasons: Spent time on the practice squads of the Houston Texans, New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers, and most recently the Tennessee Titans.
A First-Team All-Big Sky selection at Montana State in 2021, McCutcheon posted 1,219 receiving yards and nine touchdowns on 61 catches in his final college season. He ran a 4.57-second 40-yard dash at his pro day, showcasing solid athleticism for his size.

Why Lance McCutcheon’s Retirement at 27 Feels So Sudden
McCutcheon’s decision to step away in his mid-20s adds to the wave of early retirements that have stunned the NFL this offseason. While he never secured a long-term roster spot, his perseverance across five teams and his brief regular-season action with the Rams made him a fan favorite among those who root for the underdog.
Fans on social media have expressed a mix of sadness and admiration:
“Lance gave it everything he had. Undrafted hero to practice squad warrior—respect forever.”
“27 is way too young, but sometimes life calls you in a different direction. Wish him the best.”
“That 2022 preseason was electric. Thought he’d be the next big thing. Proud of the run he had.”
McCutcheon has not shared specific reasons for retiring, but the physical and mental toll of bouncing between teams and never fully breaking through likely played a role. Hopefully, he has a strong plan in place for life after football.
The NFL offseason continues to deliver surprises, and Lance McCutcheon’s retirement serves as a reminder of how fleeting even the dream of playing professional football can be.
