Newcastle United 1 Manchester City 3: match reportMarmoush scores twice as City progress into the FA cup quarter-finals
Manchester City defeated Newcastle United 3-1 at St James Park to advance to the quarter finals of the FA cup following a frustrating setback in the title race earlier in the week with a 2-2 draw at home against Nottingham Forest. City were playing Newcastle for the fifth time this season, having already played them in the leagued twice and in the semi-finals of the Carabao cup. Trafford started in goal, Nunes, Khusanov, Stones and Ake were in defence. Gonzales, Reijnders, and O’Reilly were in midfield with Doku, Savinho, and Marmoush in attack.
Newcastle were the team that made the brighter start to the game and dominated the Blues in the early stages. They almost scored in the opening ten minutes when a free kick was only half cleared by Trafford but the resulting attempt was cleared off the line by Gonzalez much to the goalkeepers relief. Tonali passed it to Barnes on the left side and was played onside by Khusanov and with a strike from his right foot, the Englishman put Newcastle in the lead with a thoroughly deserved goal for the home side.
City needed to wake up and they managed to do just that. After the Newcastle goal, the entire momentum of the game shifted in favour of the Blues and it was now the away side that was having all the chances. In the 38th minute, a ball in from Doku went past the face of goal and deflected off Savinho goalwards. Despite his best efforts, Ramsdale was unable to keep the ball from going over the line and City had their equaliser through Savinho. They almost scored again before the first half ended through Reijnders, but the shot was just wide.
Despite the missed opportunities to go in front before half-time, the Blues would not go on to rue those missed opportunities as they scored within just two minutes of the second half when Nunes played the ball into Marmoush, who controlled and rifled the ball into the roof of the net to make it 2-1. City were in front now and were in complete control of the game. Newcastle were simply unable to keep up with the intensity that City were playing with and they hardly had any chances to get back into the tie.
A brilliant pass from Stones to Savinho almost made it three but the winger attempted to lay it off to Reijnders but mistimed the pass and the ball was cleared away by the Newcastle defence.
Eventually, Marmoush got his second of the game with a shot from outside the box that was thundered past Ramsdale into the left side of the net to double the Blues lead. 3-1 with 25 minutes remaining. The Blues held on for an easy victory and had beaten Newcastle for a fourth time this season.
This was probably the best City played in the second half all season and was a brilliant performance and excellent recovery from their slow start to the game. They remain in the FA cup and in all four competitions still, two of which now at Newcastle’s expense, who have now been beaten by the Blues four out of five times this season, with the only exception being a 2-1 Newcastle home win earlier this season. Pep Guardiola however, will now serve a two-match touchline ban due to being shown too many yellow cards this season. The Carabao cup final is not included as part of the suspension. City face Real Madrid away next in another huge knockout fixture, this time in the Champions League.
