Chiefs' wide receiver Tyquan Thornton revealed what he's looking for in free agency

The Kansas City Chiefs could be in store for a busy offseason of work. After missing the playoffs entirely, head coach Andy Reid has responded by revamping his coaching staff over the past few weeks. Now, though, the front office has to work on increasing the talent level of the roster across the board.

Of course, the first step of business involves figuring out which players in the team’s crop of impending free agents it wants to bring back to town. While all eyes are on veteran tight end Travis Kelce, as retirement rumors continue to swirl around him, breakout wide receiver Tyquan Thornton has emerged as a key pending free agent, and he recently took a second to discuss what he’s looking for on the open market.

Tyquan Thornton Dishes on Free Agency

Thornton was initially selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, but he never managed to find his way with the team. After getting released midway through the 2024 campaign, Thornton latched on with the Chiefs’ practice squad before eventually signing a reserve/futures contract for the 2025 season.

With Kansas City short on wide receivers to begin the year, that thrust Thornton into action unexpectedly, and he quickly ended up forming a rapport with Patrick Mahomes, who looked his way frequently on deep shots down the field. The speedy Thornton would put together the best season of his career, as he caught 19 passes for 438 yards and three touchdowns.

Now, Thornton is set to hit the open market, where his big-play abilities are expected to be attractive in the eyes of teams across the league. While a return to Kansas City could still be in the cards, it sounds like Thornton is prioritizing his fit with whatever team he signs with, rather than simply signing with the highest bidder.

“Definitely not looking just for a bag … That’s not really what makes me truly happy,” Thornton said on “Free Agency Frenzy.” “Going out there running fast, catching passes, dancing in the end zone, celebrating with my teammates, the process of putting the (work) in and going out there, seeing it all come to fruition, that’s what it’s all about for me.”

Should the Chiefs Re-Sign Tyquan Thornton?

When Kansas City was fully healthy at wide receiver last season, Thornton struggled to carve out a role for himself. Right now, Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy are leading the way at this spot, but with Marquise Brown set to hit the open market as well, the Chiefs likely have a decision to make. They could re-sign the veteran Brown, or take a shot on Thornton and hope he can build off of his 2025 season.

The fact that Thornton is hitting the open market isn’t a great sign, as he could opt to take his talents elsewhere if Kansas City doesn’t give him what he’s looking for. Thornton’s upside is hard to ignore, and while the Chiefs should make a push to re-sign him, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him land with a new team once free agency officially gets underway.
