Why Alisson is not in Galatasaray travelling squad

Liverpool FC released their 21-man Champions League travelling squad to face Galatasaray this Monday afternoon.

Arne Slot’s men have been relatively fortunate with injuries in recent weeks, slowly welcoming key players back and finally beginning to resemble something close to a full-strength squad after a stop-start period.

However, Federico Chiesa was not spotted in training this morning and has not made the travelling squad.

Meanwhile, Alisson Becker is also a notable absence from the list. Now the reliable Paul Joyce has reported that the Brazilian has a fitness issue picked up in training this Monday morning:

“Alisson will miss Liverpool’s Champions League game with Galatasaray having complained of discomfort after Monday’s training session,” Joyce states.

“The goalkeeper has not travelled to Istanbul with the rest of Arne Slot’s squad, which amounts to an untimely injury setback. Giorgi Mamardashvili is in line to deputise.”

But luckily for the Reds, it seems that the issue will not keep the Brazilian out of action for too long:

“While the problem is thought to be minor, Liverpool decided not to risk the fitness of the Brazil No1, who has already suffered separate issues this season,” reported Joyce.

Alisson picked up an injury earlier on in the season during the 1-0 Champions League defeat away to Galatasaray in September, feeling the issue in the second half of that match. It then sidelined him for the following seven weeks.

Liverpool will hope it won’t be a reoccurrence of that hamstring injury, with Alisson increasingly picking them up more and more in recent seasons.

Arne Slot will likely give an update on the 33-year-old’s situation when he speaks in Istanbul later this evening at 6.15pm GMT, as well as Federico Chiesa’s absence.
