Green Bay Packers: Miss Out on Possible Cornerback Target

The Green Bay Packers could address their cornerback woes in either free agency or the upcoming draft, with multiple question marks at the position. Nate Hobbs has a $6.25 million roster bonus due on March 13, and the front office has to decide whether to retain or cut him after battling injuries in his first season with Green Bay. Meanwhile, many don’t view Keisean Nixon as a number one corner as he enters a contract year, and Carrington Valentine, whom the Packers have tried to replace in the starting lineup over the past two seasons, has struggled with tackling, also enters a contract year.

Mark Oldacres of Packers Wire has identified Montaric Brown as a possible cornerback target for the Packers, as he is not expected to command a massive salary. He has started 30 games, including the playoffs, throughout his four-year tenure with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Brown had a career year, posting a career-high two interceptions and 12 pass deflections across 13 starts. Spotracprojects that the former seventh-round pick’s market price is $9.2 million annually over three years, well within Green Bay’s reach.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Jaguars have re-signed Montaric Brown to a three-year, $33 million contract hours before the tampering window. The Packers miss out on the possible cornerback target, and it’s back to the drawing boards. Notable corners set to hit free agency include Jamel Dean, Marshon Lattimore, Tariq Woolen, Jaylen Watson, and Eric Stokes, among others. Due to the compensatory pick formula, the team may avoid spending big on a big-name free agent and instead target players who have been released. Signing a player who was not released would cancel out one of the comp picks the team is expected to receive when a player departs in free agency.
