According to claims emerging from Spain, Liverpool and Xabi Alonso have an agreement for him to become manager in the summer.
Arne Slot is under immense scrutiny and is at risk of losing his job in the summer if things do not improve.
The like of Fabrizio Romano report that if Liverpool do not qualify for next season’s Champions League, Slot will lose his job. FSG will hold a season review in the summer, at which point Slot’s future will be decided.
Romano said: “Then in the summer, there will be, before the summer transfer window, an internal review of everything. Of course, the Champions League campaign and how Liverpool will finish the season could be important to understand the future of Arne Slot.”
Report details Liverpool agreement with Alonso
According to a report from Spanish outlet OK Diario, Liverpool have a verbal agreement with Alonso that will see him replace Slot as manager if the Dutchman fails to achieve Champions League qualification this season.
They report: “The first purely informal contacts betweenLiverpool andXabi Alonso‘s representatives took place during the last week of November 2025, when the Tolosa native was already facing serious questions from the Real Madrid hierarchy.
“That initial conversation occurred the week ofReal Madrid‘s match inAthens againstOlympiacos. The Liverpool officials wanted to know if the Tolosa-born coach was willing totake the reins at theReds, who were already looking to dismissArne Slot, for the following season.”

Should Slot achieve qualification for next season’s Champions League, it would reportedly nullify the agreement with Liverpool.
FSG are taking unnecessary risks
If FSG have an agreement of any sort with Alonso, it stands to reason that they already believe the Dutchman has failed to perform as expected this season.
So in that case, surely Champions League qualification is irrelevant?
As far as I’m concerned, if a manager who won the Premier League last season has to scrape a fifth-place finish the following season, he has failed in his role.
Additionally, if FSG has an agreement with Alonso, wouldn’t it make more sense to fire Slot before the season ends instead of risking the financial and player attraction blow of losing the Champions League?
