The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly open to trading superstar left tackle Trent Williams.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the two sides haven't been able to get something done with his contract and San Fran is now open to trading Williams.
"The 49ers are now said to be open to trading Pro Bowl LT Trent Williams, sources say, if the situation doesn’t get resolved. A resolution has not been easy and Williams is frustrated with the process. He’s due $32M in salary with a $38M+ cap number," Rapoport reported.
While Williams is getting up there in age (38 in July), he's still playing at a high level and was once again one of the very best offensive linemen in the NFL in 2025.
According to Pro Football Focus, Williams ranked 12th in pass-blocking grade (79.9) among tackles and second in run-blocking grade (92.8).
Three teams that should have interest are the Pittsburgh Steelers, Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears.
The Steelers have a big question mark at left tackle thanks to Broderick Jones, who suffered a significant neck injury last offseason that leaves his status for 2026 up in the air. Jones has been a disappointment overall, also.
The Bears have an injury concern of their own at left tackle after Ozzy Trapilo came down with a torn patellar tendon in the playoffs that could knock him out for most or all of next season.
Meanwhile, in Detroit, the Lions are set to release left tackle Taylor Decker after he requested to be following a failed negotiation over a reworked contract that saw the Lions wanting Decker to take a pay cut.
The Steelers are in the best position to acquire Williams via trade thanks to their having a ton of draft picks.
