Why Falcons' Tua Tagovailoa rumor makes sense but has a twist

The Atlanta Falcons appear to be closing in on a major free agent QB signing.

Tua Tagovailoa has been linked as a target of the Falcons.

The former Miami Dolphins QB is expected to be officially released on Wednesday, at which point, the Falcons could be in play.

"The Falcons are making a strong push to sign former Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa and a deal could come together soon, sources tell The Insiders," NFL Network's Tom Pelissero wrote on Monday morning on X. "No deal can be finalized until Tua is officially released Wednesday. But signs point to Atlanta."

That timing twist is worth noting. A lot of reports will emerge once the NFL's negotiating window opens on Monday at 12 noon ET, but Tagovailoa isn't actually a free agent yet, so his negotiation situation is a bit different.

The Dolphins won't release him until Wednesday, and since he's technically under contract with Miami until then, the rules around negotiating with him are a little different.

The good news for Atlanta is that this has emerged already. It means it is very likely to come together smoothly when the time comes.

Why Falcons make sense for Tua Tagovailoa

The biggest thing to note here is that Tagovailoa is left-handed, the same as Michael Penix Jr.

Signing Tua might make for a complicated QB competition to be decided upon by new head coach Kevin Stefanski.

But since they're both lefties, nothing major about the offense would have to change, no matter who actually wins the job.

That's a subtle yet major win if Atlanta can line that up.
