Pariots Lose Alec Pierce Sweepstakes To Colts; What's Next For New England?

The New England Patriots were reportedly interested in Alec Pierce, but he has reportedly agreed to a new deal with the Indianapolis Colts.

Pierce was the best receiver available in free agency, and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that he has agreed to a new deal with the Colts. The NFL's legal tampering window opened at noon on Monday, and it did not take long for Pierce to sign. The Colts confirmed the deal on social media.

"Free agent WR Alec Pierce has agreed to terms to remain in Indianapolis on a historic 4 year $114M deal that will make him the highest paid free agent receiver in NFL History," Rapoport reported. "The deal negotiated by agents Mike Swenson and CJ LaBoy, came together overnight and contains $84m in guarantees, $60m fully guaranteed at signing, and a max package of $116M."

The Patriots need a new No. 1 receiver since they plan to release Stefon Diggs when the new league year starts. Pierce would have been a great fit, but now the Patriots need to pivot. Pierce got paid handsomely, and the Patriots likely were not willing to spend that much given that they have other needs.

The Patriots are still rumored to be involved in trade talks for A.J. Brown, but some free agents could also interest them. Romeo Doubs, Jauan Jennings, Wan'dale Robinson and Mike Evans are all still available. Tyreek Hill is also on the market, but his health is a question mark right now.

The Patriots should strike quickly regardless. They need a wide receiver, and may not want to wait around til late in the offseason like last year. This offseason, they have Super Bowl expectations and will need a reliable top target for Drake Maye.
