Giants trade rumor could lead to deal with Colts after big free-agent signing

The Indianapolis Colts have retained wide receiver Alec Pierce and that reportedly could open the door to a trade with the New York Giants.

According to multiple reports, the Colts have re-signed Pierce to a four-year, $116 million contract.

Throughout the offseason, it was believed that if the Colts gave Pierce the bag, they could turn around and either trade or cut fellow wideout Michael Pittman Jr.

In the wake of Pierce being traded, Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com reports that a Pittman to Giants trade is one to keep an eye on and is something New York will consider if it's available.

"Given the Alec Pierce news on his lucrative deal to return to Indy, I'd keep an eye on Michael Pittman as a WR the Giants will consider via trade," Stapleton said on Monday afternoon. "Heard his name connected previously but hinged on Pierce."

The Giants entered the offseason with a big need at wide receiver thanks to the pending free-agent status of Wan'Dale Robinson.

While reports suggest the Giants want to bring Robinson back, he has been heavily connected to the Tennessee Titans, who have a lot more money to spend than New York, which could price the Giants out.

Pittman would be a fine addition as a No. 2 receiver across from Malik Nabers. The veteran has two 1,000-yard seasons under his belt and his big frame makes him an ideal target for a young quarterback like Jaxson Dart.

Pittman has had a few down years in a row, but the Colts also haven't had a great situation under center in that span. Even if he doesn't pan out, the Giants won't be locked to Pittman for more than a year, as his contract is up after 2026.
