Why Chiefs signed Kenneth Walker in NFL free agency

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a free agency splash to bolster the offense.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Chiefs are signing running back Kenneth Walker in NFL free agency.

"Super Bowl MVP RB Kenneth Walker is signing with Kansas City, per source," Schefter said.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz added that the deal is for three years with a max value of $45 million with $28.7 million guaranteed.

"Chiefs deal with Kenneth Walker is 3-years for $43.05M and it could be worth up to $45M, per sources. He gets $28.7M guaranteed," Schultz said.

Why Chiefs signed Kenneth Walker in NFL free agency?

The Chiefs' rushing attack was incredibly lackluster in 2025, as Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt were ineffective in providing a boost.

Now, Kansas City has a difference-maker in the backfield in Walker, who had over 1,000 rushing yards in 2025 and established himself as a star during Seattle's Super Bowl run. Walker had 313 rushing yards and four touchdowns during the Seahawks' playoff run, and took home Super Bowl MVP honors with 135 rushing yards in the big game.

Walker should take some pressure off quarterback Patrick Mahomes and give the Chiefs' offense a more versatile attack in 2026.
