Why Rams are signing cornerback Jaylen Watson in free agency

The Los Angeles Rams are adding another Kansas City Chiefs cornerback, this time in NFL free agency.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Rams are signing Jaylen Watson to a three-year deal.

"Another former Chiefs CB in LA: former KC cornerback Jaylen Watson reached agreement today on a three-year with the Los Angeles Rams, per Collin Roberts of Excel. The Rams now will have two former Chiefs CBs, Watson and Trent McDuffie. The KC Rams," Schefter said.

Despite trading for Trent McDuffie, the Rams still have a need at cornerback, especially on the boundary.

Watson is coming off a career year in 2025 with two interceptions and allowed just a 69 passer rating when targeted. He is still an ascending player who has been a key piece to two Super Bowl teams for the Chiefs.

Now in Los Angeles, Watson will step in as a starter on the Rams' defense and provide solid play as their potential No. 1 corner. The team's secondary was a weakness in 2025, but it should be a strength in 2026.
