'I don't know' – Robin Roefs has already delivered verdict on £50m Chelsea transfer links

The Sunderland goalkeeper has previously addressed speculation linking him with a £50million move to Chelsea

Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs has already played down speculation linking him with a £50million move away from the club this summer amid reported interest from Chelsea.

Reports have suggested the Stamford Bridge side are monitoring the Dutch international as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping department ahead of the next transfer window. Transfer journalist Alan Nixon has claimed Chelsea are currently leading the race for Roefs’ signature, though the London club would need to meet Sunderland’s reported £50million valuation to secure a deal. Football Insider have now also published similar reports.

Roefs only joined the Black Cats last summer following their promotion to the Premier League, signing a five-year contract after completing his move from Dutch side NEC Nijmegen. The 23-year-old has quickly established himself as Sunderland’s first-choice goalkeeper under Régis Le Bris, displacing Anthony Patterson between the posts. His assured performances during Sunderland’s first campaign back in the top flight have drawn attention from across Europe, with Chelsea said to be in the market for a new long-term number one.

However, Roefs insists he is not paying attention to the transfer speculation. “I don't know. I don't know what to make of it. I don't hear anything from it from my agents. As long as I don't know anything about it, they can read or write what they want. I don't know,” Roefs told The Echo recently. “Obviously, it's a compliment, I think, if people write it about you. I'm really not into this. It's my first season in the Premier League, my first season here. I'm really enjoying every single minute of it, so I'm not thinking of anything else.”

Reports have also suggested Roefs could consider a move should Chelsea secure Champions League qualification, though Sunderland remain in a strong negotiating position given the length of the goalkeeper’s contract and his importance to the club’s long-term project.

For now, the Dutchman says his focus remains firmly on Sunderland. “As I say, I think I enjoy every minute, especially when we play at home. But also away games, the fans are just always with us... we haven't played in the stadium yet, where the atmosphere has not been like this.”

Le Bris recently underlined how important the goalkeeper has become to Sunderland since arriving on Wearside. “He's key,” the head coach said. “It's fair to say that in an efficient team, you need strong players on both sides. I think the goalkeeper and the centre-backs are really important to protect the goal.

“He's young, without a lot of experience. Often, you would say you need an experienced goalkeeper, because this role is really demanding, even psychologically. So he's doing really well. When you give opportunities to young players, you can be surprised. I think it's part of our identity.”

Roefs’ impressive first season in England has also raised the possibility of international recognition, with the goalkeeper potentially in contention for a place in the Netherlands’ World Cup squad this summer - a development that could further increase his market value. Sunderland, however, remain well protected should interest intensify, with Roefs tied to a long-term contract and firmly established as a key figure in Le Bris’ side.
