Jets set to sign Bengals 14.5 career sack pass rusher to $36 million contract

The New York Jets are making some big changes on the defensive side of the ball this offseason. Aaron Glenn is taking over playcalling duties, and they're making some other big roster moves already this offseason.

Minkah Fitzpatrick was picked up in a trade with the Miami Dolphins, and they sent Jermaine Johnson to the Tennessee Titans for D'Vondre Sweat. The departure of Johnson opens the door for an edge rusher.

And early in free agency's legal tampering period, the Jets are making a big addition at that position. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Jets are in agreement on a $36 million contract with Cincinnati Bengals free agent Joseph Ossai.

Jets in agreement with Joseph Ossai on $36M deal

"Jets reached agreement today with DE Joseph Ossai on a 3-year, $36 million deal that includes $22.5M fully guaranteed, per David Mulagheta at Athletes First," Schefter reports.

This is a big addition for the Jets, as they're adding a veteran defensive end to replace Johnson in their defense. Glenn's defense is beginning to take shape, and this is a big addition for the Jets.

Across his four-year Bengals career, Ossai has 14.5 sacks with 116 total tackles, 16 tackles for loss, and 44 quarterback hits.

Last season, he had 5.0 sacks, 43 tackles, nine tackles for loss, and 12 quarterback hits. It was a career high in tackles for loss and tied for the most sacks he's had in a season in his career.

Ossai is still just 25 years old, though he will turn 26 by the beginning of the season. He's a nice pickup for the Jets defense, which is undergoing some major changes this offseason.

The former 2022 third-rounder is leaving the Bengals and joining the Jets, who are making sweeping changes on the defensive side of the ball this offseason.
