Rapoport: Dolphins Signing Top Free Agent QB Malik Willis

The Miami Dolphins are reportedly signing free agent quarterback Malik Willis to a three-year, $67.5 million deal, with $45 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport. Willis was largely viewed as the top quarterback on the market, and he received a big-time deal as a result.

That takes one option off the board for the Pittsburgh Steelers. While some wanted Willis to land in Pittsburgh, that price tag comes with a lot of risk. Willis hasn’t done much in the NFL, only starting six games over four seasons. He’s got a lot of intangibles, but the lack of experience is concerning.

However, the Dolphins have some familiarity with him. Jeff Hafley, their new head coach, was previously the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator. Jon-Eric Sullivan, their new general manager, was also previously with the Packers. Willis spent the past two seasons in Green Bay, so the Dolphins’ decision makers are very familiar with him.

It felt like the Dolphins were the top destination for Willis because of that. Also, the cut ties with Tua Tagovailoa recently, leaving them with a hole under center. Willis brings in a lot of athleticism, and if he can unlock his potential, then he could be an upgrade for Miami.

Meanwhile, the Steelers are still without a quarterback. All signs seem to point to Aaron Rodgers, but there’s no telling what his future holds. Omar Khan expected a decision from Rodgers sooner than the Steelers got last year. However, Rodgers didn’t give any hints on what he’ll do next during his most recent media appearance.

If Rodgers doesn’t return, there are still other quarterbacks available. However, none look as enticing as Willis. This could be a decision that the Steelers come to regret, depending on how Willis does for the Dolphins.

The rest of the free agent quarterback crop consists mostly of either veterans past their prime or players better suited to be backups. Willis, at only 26 years old, could still have some upside. Only time will tell whether or not Pittsburgh made the right call. Like last year, perhaps they already have a feeling that Rodgers will play for them. He’s seemed to be their top target under center since the 2025 season ended.
