James Tarkowski opens up about Everton teammate Dwight McNeil after 'tough' period

Dwight McNeil has endured a tough couple of months at Everton.

Dwight McNeil has found himself out of the team for most of the season, and he was due to leave in the winter transfer window.

McNeil was on the verge of joining Crystal Palace on deadline day, only to be informed that the deal had collapsed in the final hours.

David Moyes has reintegrated him into his Everton squad over the last couple of weeks, as he started in the wins against Newcastle and Burnley.

McNeil was excellent against Burnley last time out, and his teammate James Tarkowski heaped praise on him after the game.

Speaking to Everton’s website, Tarkowski opened up about McNeil and explained that he’s delighted he’s been able to bounce back from a tough period.

ā€œI’m absolutely buzzing for him,ā€ the Toffees centre-back said.

ā€œProud of him really. It’s tough what he’s been through. He’s not played a lot of games, he’s played a few, but not as many as he would’ve liked.

ā€œTo come in the last two games and do the job he’s done… he was terrific. That was the Dwight I know, and that’s the Dwight I want to see week in and week out.

ā€œHis ability on the ball, the way he travels, his work rate, his energy, that was everything he’s done so well throughout his career.

ā€œI want to see it more from him all the time.ā€

Everton fans gave McNeil a standing ovation when he was subbed off against Burnley, which he was visibly surprised by.

He thanked supporters after the game: ā€œI just want to thank you all for the reception I got coming off the pitch. It means a lot. But we keep going, on to the next game.ā€

The 26-year-old is expected to retain his spot in the starting line-up for the trip to Arsenal this weekend.
