Why Saints are signing running back Travis Etienne in NFL free agency

The New Orleans Saints have made a splash in the running back room in NFL free agency.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Saints are signing Jacksonville Jaguars free agent running back Travis Etienne.

"Source: Former Jaguars RB Travis Etienne will be signing with the New Orleans Saints. He’s from Louisiana and it was important for him to be near home," Schefter said.

Etienne is getting a four-year deal worth $52 million from the Saints, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Why Saints are signing running back Travis Etienne

Etienne is coming off one of the better years of his career, tallying a career-high 13 total touchdowns and posting 1,000 rushing yards for the third time in four seasons.

Signing Etienne means that the Saints could be looking to move on from Alvin Kamara. It's hard to envision a scenario where New Orleans signs Etienne and has him serve as the backup.

Overall, Etienne will provide a much-needed boost to the Saints' rushing attack and inject some youth into the position group.
