Chiefs' new $21 million signing plays both offense and defense

The Kansas City Chiefs made early free agency headlines by signing Kenneth Walker.

But it might be their signing of Khyiris Tonga that gives Andy Reid his most entertaining chess piece.

Tonga's signing was reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero on Monday afternoon. It's a three-year deal for $21 million.

The fun part here: Tonga plays offense and defense.

His base position is defensive tackle, and he's good at it. In 2025, his first year with the Patriots, he made 24 tackles in a rotational role and also knocked down two passes.

He also was utilized as a situational fullback for the Patriots in 2025. He got 14 snaps on offense, averaging 1.0 per game in the 14 games he played.

They didn't let him touch the ball, but would you put that past Andy Reid?

Tonga's NFL journey has been wandering, but this is a rewarding contract.

The 6-foot-2, 335-pound Tonga went to college at BYU and was a seventh-round pick by the Chicago Bears in 2021. He stuck with Chicago just for a season.

Tonga played 25 games over 2022 and 2023 with the Minnesota Vikings.

He then moved on to the Arizona Cardinals for 2024, and then the Patriots for 2025.

Now he gets a longer-term deal, some stability, and a chance to join a team that is clearly excited to have him.
