Liverpool’s squad deficiencies have been highlighted despite a record spend, where do they need to strengthen?

Liverpool shocked the whole of football last summer when they went on something of a transfer extravaganza.

They didn’t just spend big, they sold big too and brought in a small fortune via the exits of Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Jarell Quansah, to name but a few. The result was a record spend and yet they still didn’t hit top spot in terms of net spend which means that this summer could be every bit as busy. The transition from Jurgen Klopp to Arne Slot still has some work to do throughout the squad as shown by a recent lack of options.

Liverpool transfer needs

One area that seemed to be set was full-back, however, right-back has been a problem all season and Milos Kerkez has yet to properly settle at left-back. He is young enough to improve but it would be a surprise if competition wasn’t added, especially with Andy Robertson set to leave Liverpool. The veteran defenders all-action display against Wolves should serve as a reminder of what he is still capable of and that there is still plenty of life left in the old dog yet. As well as strengthening the centre-half department, full-back remains an area of concern.

Another department that has looked woefully short of options this season is on the wing. Cody Gakpo’s all-round play has been sub-par for almost the whole campaign with Mohamed Salah’s exit to MLS or Saudi Arabia pretty much a foregone conclusion. Even if they both stayed at Anfield, Liverpool still need to add depth given that Rio Ndumoha and Jeremie Frimpong are the current options available after them.

Liverpool to spend big?

According to TEAMtalk, the plan is for Liverpool to go big again with another position being addressed by the recruitment team: “Sources have told us that Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes could look at making ‘four or five more significant signings’ at the end of the season. Among the areas that the defending Premier League champions aim to strengthen is the midfield.”

Several names have been mentioned for the midfield. All of them are established names with Premier League operators Sandro Tonali, Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton likely to be at the top of Richard Hughes’ shopping list, given reports throughout the season. Anderson has been linked with Man City whilst competition is hotting up for the other two as clubs scramble to find a playmaker who can pull the strings from deep. If Liverpool are looking for a player of this calibre, they won’t come cheap.
