The Cleveland Cavaliers will have their two biggest stars available Monday night as they try to rebound from a tough loss when they host the Philadelphia 76ers in the second night of a back-to-back.

Donovan Mitchell returned to the lineup Sunday after missing four consecutive games with a right groin strain, while Evan Mobley continued his strong play since returning from injury. Despite their efforts, Cleveland fell 109-98 to the Boston Celtics in a key Eastern Conference matchup.

Mitchell finished with 30 points, one steal and two blocks, while Mobley added 24 points and eight rebounds for the Cavaliers, who had entered the game riding a season-high seven-game home winning streak.

The loss dropped Cleveland to 39-25, leaving the Cavaliers 1.5 games behind the No. 3 New York Knicks and four games behind the No. 2 Celtics as the Eastern Conference playoff race tightens.

Donovan Mitchell Returns From Injury to Lead Cavaliers

Sunday’s game marked Mitchell’s first appearance since straining his groin on Feb. 24. The Cavaliers star immediately resumed his role as the emotional and competitive leader of the team.

“As the leader of the group, that’s kind of the role,” Mitchell said after the game. “It’s not always just scoring. It’s on both ends of the floor — it’s rebounds, extra plays, intensity plays — all the little things like that. That’s truly what it is.”

Mitchell emphasized that his responsibility extends beyond putting points on the board.

“For me, it’s just trying to push the energy high, set that tone and go from there,” he said. “That’s my job as the leader of the group.”

His return provided a boost for Cleveland’s offense, though the Cavaliers struggled to contain Boston down the stretch.

Cavaliers Rally Falls Short Against Celtics

Cleveland nearly mounted a late comeback after falling behind in the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers trimmed Boston’s lead to 94-86 midway through the final period when rookie Jaylon Tyson knocked down a 3-pointer.

But the Celtics quickly responded behind reserve guard Payton Pritchard, who hit a 3-pointer and followed it with two consecutive baskets to push the lead back to double digits.

Jayson Tatum — playing just his second game since returning from a torn Achilles — finished with 20 points, including a clutch three-pointer with 1:59 remaining that effectively sealed the victory.

Despite the defeat, Mitchell said Cleveland’s overall progress remains encouraging.

“I think we’ve been doing a good job,” Mitchell said. “We understand there are so many little details, and it’s so important to do those little things over and over again.”

Cavaliers Emphasizing Consistency Down the Stretch

Mitchell pointed to several recent games — including matchups against Detroit and Brooklyn — as examples of Cleveland executing the finer points of the game while continuing to search for improvements.

“There are so many little things that I think we’re executing on, and we can still be better,” Mitchell said. “In the first half, it was really just about shots.”

Mitchell said he doesn’t believe urgency has been an issue for Cleveland.

“I’m not sitting here thinking we need to find a way to step up our sense of urgency,” he said. “I think it’s there. We just have to continue to approach and go over these things.”

The All-Star guard believes the Cavaliers are positioned well entering the final stretch of the regular season.

“The best thing is that we’re back healthy,” Mitchell said. “Our sense of urgency is at an all-time high. We’ve talked about it, we’ve walked the walk, and now we’ve got to continue to be elite in order to do what we want to do.”

Evan Mobley Finding Rhythm After Injury

Mobley has also shown signs of regaining his rhythm after missing more than three weeks in February with a left calf strain.

Over his last five games, the versatile big man is averaging 18.8 points and 9.0 rebounds while playing 30.2 minutes per night, giving Cleveland a strong interior presence alongside Mitchell’s perimeter scoring.

The Cavaliers could also receive additional depth Monday, as forward Dean Wade is probable to play after returning Sunday from a three-game absence caused by a left ankle sprain. Wade recorded seven points, three rebounds and three assists against Boston.

With their roster nearing full health and the postseason approaching, the Cavaliers will look to quickly regroup against Philadelphia as they continue their push for a higher playoff seed in the Eastern Conference.
