Liverpool return to action on Tuesday evening with a Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash against Galatasaray, but two players from the squad that beat Wolves in the FA Cup on Friday missed the trip to Istanbul.
Alisson Becker is the headline absentee after experiencing discomfort towards the end of Monday’s training session at the AXA Training Centre in Kirkby.
The Brazil international took part in the session but will not be risked, with Liverpool cautious given his previous fitness issues.
His absence means Georgia international Giorgi Mamardashvili is expected to start in goal at Rams Park, while Freddie Woodman will provide cover on the bench.
Federico Chiesa has also not travelled after missing Monday’s training session. His absence further limits Liverpool’s attacking options, with Alexander Isak still sidelined as he continues to recover from a broken leg suffered in December.
Chiesa made a late substitute appearance in last Tuesday’s 2-1 Premier League defeat at Wolves but remained on the bench during Friday night’s FA Cup victory against the same opposition.
Meanwhile, Trey Nyoni was also absent from the open training session after playing the first half of Rob Page’s Under-21s side’s 5-0 win over Wolves on Sunday.
Providing an injury update on Alisson and Chiesa, Arne Slot said at his pre-match press conference: “Federico was also not in the session, he felt unwell last night, so that’s why he wasn’t training with us today and not travelling with us.
“Ali, of course, was in the session – as many people could see – but unfortunately he felt something towards the end of the session. And it was, how do you say this… people looked at it and we decided and he decided together that it wasn’t good enough to play tomorrow. And then it’s of no use travelling.”
Slot remains hopeful that Alisson could be available for Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. “There’s definitely a chance, yeah, because we don’t expect it to be a big thing,” added Slot. “But it was too much to be available for tomorrow.”
