Patrick Mahomes is optimistic. The Chiefs quarterback used social media to praise Kenneth Walker III on Sunday. Walker agreed to terms on a spectacular three-year contract. This agreement is the largest for a running back in NFL free agency history.
Walker is 25 years old. He previously led the Seattle Seahawks to a championship victory in Super Bowl LX at Caesars Superdome. In that game, Walker carried the ball 27 times for 135 yards. This total was the highest in a Super Bowl since 1998. Walker amassed 313 rushing yards and four touchdowns during that postseason run. He finished the regular season with 1,027 rushing yards and 31 receptions. He is a dual-threat weapon for Coach Andy Reid.

In a nutshell, Kansas City needed a primary runner. Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt saw their contracts expire on March 9. Pacheco had a deficient season and struggled to maintain his form. He averaged 3.9 yards per carry over 118 attempts. Mahomes is currently recovering from an ACL injury and needs a balanced offense to excel.

Brett Veach released Jawaan Taylor to clear $20 million in cap space. Mahomes restructured his contract in February to create more spending power. On “The Pat McAfee Show,” Dan Orlovsky said the offense’s slide was due to the team’s inability to run the ball. No back averaged more than four yards per carry for the team last year. Walker’s impact provides the team with an elite ground game not seen since the prime of Jamaal Charles.
“100% the slide of the Chiefs offense over the last two or three years is directly correlated to them not being able to run the football really at all. Last year, they were the only team in the NFL to not have a back average more than four yards per carry,” said Orlovsky.

The team can focus on other needs during the NFL draft. Kansas City holds the ninth pick. The front office may target an offensive lineman to replace Joe Thuney. Thuney was traded to the Chicago Bears during the offseason. Orlovsky said the move indicates the team does not believe Jeremiah Love will be available at pick nine. Love is a venturesome prospect who ran a 4.3-second 40-yard dash.
At all events, Walker is a significant asset. He will be a focal point in the complex schemes Reid has designed.
