Breaking: Falcons Make Tua Tagovailoa Signing Official with One-Year Deal

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins will likely be unable to trade Tua Tagovailoa

After rumors started to circulate that the Atlanta Falcons were pursuing Tua Tagovailoa, the deal is finally made official on Monday afternoon. The initial report is by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who broke the news on NFL Live. The Miami Dolphins released Tua Tagovailoa.

This decision by the Falcons will surely draw controversy, but the Dolphins owe Tua $39 million, so it’s likely not going to be a contractual burden for the Falcons. This signing might signal that new GM Ian Cunningman still has a lot of trust in Michael Penix Jr., who is sidelined right now due to a torn ACL. Tua Tagovailoa started 14 games with the Dolphins last season before being benched, and it was ugly at times for Tua being out on the field, as he threw for 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Tua’s market was never going to be vast due to his recent poor performance, but this signing also signals that Tua Tagovailoa will likely be the Falcons’ starter until Penix Jr. returns healthy, which could be week 3 or 4 if he endures any rehab setbacks.

Tua spent the first six seasons of his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins and was a standout quarterback at Alabama. He has 18,166 passing yards, 120 touchdowns, and 59 interceptions in his career. He’s a one-time Pro Bowler from 2023.

After not being able to find a trade partner for Tua Tagovailoa, the only option for the Miami Dolphins was to release him and his massive contract. As there’s a new regime in Miami, Tua Tagovailoa got dumped off, and Atlanta is ultimately the team to take a flyer on him.
