Manchester City are chasing down Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table

Real Madrid have cooled their interest in Manchester City midfielder Rodri, according to Spanish news outlet AS. The La Liga giants have been keeping tabs on the player’s situation ahead of the summer. However, they are believed to have shelved their pursuit of him for now.

City are sat in 2nd place in the Premier League table. They are seven points behind Arsenal at the summit with a game in hand. Pep Guardiola’s side won 3-1 away at Newcastle United over the weekend in the FA Cup.

Manchester City transfer update regarding Rodri emerges

City will want to keep hold of Rodri for as long as possible. He has been a key player for the North West outfit over recent years. His contract at the Etihad Stadium expires in June 2027.

Rodri, 29, is due to become a free agent next year. Therefore, his current club need to start thinking about his long-term future. They won’t want to lose him for nothing, especially to a potential Champions League rival like Real Madrid.

The Spain international, who has 59 caps to his name, made the move to England back in 2019. He hasn’t looked back since and has become one of City’s key players. The Madrid-born man has made 289 appearances in all competitions to date, 24 of which have come this season, and he has chipped in with 28 goals.

Prior to his transfer, he spent a year at Atletico Madrid. He made 47 outings under Diego Simeone’s guidance. Rodri has also had a spell in the past at Villarreal.

Rodri hailed by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola

City head coach Guardiola has recently heaped praise on Rodri and said: “Finally it has happened like we wanted it to happen a long time ago. He has come back and had a consistent routine. Now we are playing a lot of games and long travel times. Fatigue is involved. We are traveling to Madrid, then come back.

“Travel to London, that is four or five hours to the hotel all the time. So, we have to use all the squad otherwise it will not be possible to play in the rhythm that we want to play. Step by step Rodri is getting better and better (in performances). Everybody knows it.”
