Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin dismissed the idea cornerback James Pierre will replace former All-Pro Darius Slay in the starting lineup.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been more than active at the start of the NFL’s legal tampering period. However, they have also lost key pieces. Despite trading for 1,000-yard wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., the team balanced that out with a loss in the cornerback room.

According to NFL Network insider Cameron Wolfe, free-agent cornerback James Pierre has signed a two-year deal worth $8.5 million with the Minnesota Vikings. After spending parts of six seasons in the Steel City, Pierre finds a new home in the Twin Cities.

James Pierre Earned His Payday with the Pittsburgh Steelers

Pierre rightfully deserved a multi-year contract in free agency. He grew from an undrafted player into a true starter. In 2025, he set career-highs in starts (5), pass deflections (11), and opposing passer rating allowed (41.4). Those aforementioned 11 pass deflections were good for second on the team, right behind Joey Porter Jr.

Vikings have agreed to terms with CB James Pierre on a two-year, $8.5 million deal with $3.7 million guaranteed, per his agent Toney Scott. Pierre gets a $2.5 million signing bonus.

While the Steelers’ defense was a struggling unit, seeing as it finished 26th in total defense, Pierre was a true bright spot. His growth over the last six seasons was rewarded with a major contract. He now joins an elite Minnesota Vikings defense that finished 2025 as the third-ranked total defense in the league. Furthermore, Minnesota was the second-best pass defense a year ago, too (158.5 YPG).

This opportunity doesn’t come about without his patience and desire to grow. In fact, he proved that former head coach Mike Tomlin, who repeatedly brought him back on the practice squad, was right to give him more opportunities.

The Steelers’ Plan to Replace James Pierre

With the Steelers hiring new head coach Mike McCarthy this offseason, the organization decided not to bring back defensive coordinator Teryl Austin. To replace him, they hired former Las Vegas Raider defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. In Graham’s defensive back room, he will have veteran players such as Porter and Pro Bowl safety Jalen Ramsey to lean on. Still, Graham and the Steelers have a hole on the opposite side of Porter.

Well, that is, until they made the move to sign former Super Bowl champion cornerback Jamel Dean to a three-year deal worth $36.75 million. Dean, 29, spent the first seven seasons of his career in Tampa Bay with the Bucs, where he recorded 61 career pass deflections and 359 career tackles.

More often than not, fans should have reason to be excited when their team signs a player to a multi-year deal, let alone a three-year deal. In this case, the Steelers’ choosing to sign Dean to fill the hole left by Pierre was a huge decision.

Currently, Steelers GM Omar Khan has nearly $19 million in cap space at his disposal. He also has five picks within the first three rounds of the NFL Draft coming up in April. It would be hard to see the Steelers not getting even better from here with all of the opportunities that they have left.
